Asato Ichijo was an old, powerful Noble Class vampire. The head of the Vampire Council (also known as the “Senate”) he was often called by the title “Ichiou” (which is a combination of ichi meaning “one” and ou which can be used as an honorific when referring to an older man) because of his position as the “first vampire” of the Senate. He used every method possible to ensure that the Council remained in control of the vampire world. He was Kaname Kuran’s legal guardian after the death of Harkua and Juri. He was wary of those who wanted a return to monarchy and as such kept a close watch and hold over young Kaname, who was the living symbol of the old monarchy. He attempted to control Kaname for as long as possible and wanted his grandson Takuma to spy on him. He wanted Takuma to eventually take his place on the Council, but Takuma choose Kaname, leading to a final battle between grandfather and grandson in which Asato wounded Takuma grievously and was himself killed.

Scheming, imperial and cold, he nevertheless appeared to genuinely care about his grandson, although that didn’t stop him from eventually fighting him when Takuma chose Kaname’s side over his. Asato held a deep distrust of Purebloods and did not want the vampire world so much in their control. He was obsessively interested in Kaname’s blood, which Kaname would never give him and kept as tight a hand on Kaname’s affairs as he could, until Kaname grew too old for him to easily cage and ‘escaped’ to Cross Academy. Asato supported the attempt to bring back Rido Kuran as the head of the Kuran family instead of Kaname in order to strengthen the power of the Council since Rido was on their side, and too self-absorbed and unstable to make a credible king for the monarchy supporting factions.
