Juri Kuran was a Pureblood vampire of the ancient and powerful Kuran family. Her father was the last King of the Kuran line who ended the Monarchy and established the Vampire Council. She married her older brother Haruka, a practice not uncommon in pureblood families where preserving the bloodline often means very close intermarriage. In Haruka and Juri’s case, however, it was much more than just preserving the Kuran bloodline untainted. She and Haruka were very much in love right up to the time they died. Juri attended a human high school when she was younger, seeming to prefer distancing herself from vampire society. This perhaps influenced some of her eventual decision to protect her daughter by giving her a taste of that more carefree life for a time. Mother of Yuki Kuran and adopted mother of Kaname Kuran, Juri died when Yuki was around 5 years old.

Outspoken and high spirited, Juri was a strong woman, dedicated to her family and her dreams of a peaceful existence with humans. She is the principle reason why hunter Kaien Cross learned to change his mind about wanting the destruction of all vampires and eventually came to be a dedicated advocate of co-existence. She liked to tease young Kaname about his serious personality and would send him to play with Takuma Ichijo, hoping Takuma’s sunny disposition would rub off on him.

She doted on Yuki and would literally do anything for her happiness and protection. In the end, Juri made the ultimate sacrifice for her beloved daughter. While Haruka fought his final battle with Rido Kuran, Juri gave her own life to cast the spell to seal 5-year-old Yuki’s pureblood genes, turning her into a human and erasing her memories of her previous life.
