Shizuka Hio was a Pureblood vampire from a family with a history of rouge tendencies. Sometimes called the “Madly blooming princess” she was kept in a cage since the time she was born, mostly due to the influence of Rido Kuran, to whom she was promised as a fiancé. Given humans to eat, Shizuka eventually fell in love with one of her food sources and she and her ex-human lover ran away together. Tampering with the hunter lists resulted in the Kiryus hunting down and executing her lover. Vowing vengeance, Shizuka eventually turned the Kiryus’ son, Zero, into a vampire in front of them and then killed them, taking her leave with their other son, Ichiru, who had become her confidant.

Cool, graceful, commanding and cruel, Shizuka created a lot of heart-ache but her own story was equally tragic and full of pain and injustice. She wanted to kill Kaname for his blood, appeared to enjoy tormenting Zero and tried to use him against Yuki, but at the same time she took care of Maria and Ichiru, both of whom were naturally “defective” in some way, and gave them her strength. She did not love Ichiru, but she did care about him in her own way.

She was ultimately shot by Zero and then killed by Kaname after attempting to make Zero help her turn Yuki into a vampire. She intended to use Yuki as an assassin to kill Kaname, but unbeknownst to her, biting Yuki would actually have caused Yuki to awaken to her true nature and go insane. Shizuka died in Ichiru’s arms and was perhaps, finally at peace.
