Kaito Takamiya is a young hunter and a teacher at Cross Academy. When Ichiru and Zero were young Kaito’s teacher was injured and Kaito came to train under Yagari along with the Kiryu twins, prior to Yagari losing his eye. Kaito’s elder brother was bitten by a pureblood and turned into an ex-human. Kaito was eventually the one who hunted and killed him. In current times, Kaito and Zero share a similar attitude towards vampires, including a strong dislike of purebloods. When they were young, Kaito picked on Zero for being too soft to be a hunter, and on Ichiru for his infirmity, but now that they are grown his and Zero’s relationship appears to be more friendly. Kaito first appeared in the Vampire Knight light novels and later showed up in the manga as well.

Kaito was a bit of a bully as a teen, although this could have been at least partially a result of his pain over what happened with his brother. He seems less so as an adult, although possibly inclined to stirring the pot and seeing what happens. In one such instance he helped Yori Wakaba sneak into a vampire party, because if any of the vampires tried anything it would have given the hunters reason to take action. It’s not entirely clear whether he actually wanted this to happen, or if he was testing Zero to see how much he might want that to happen. Despite this, he appears to be fairly genuinely interested in Zero’s welfare for the most part.
