Pureblood Vampires, also sometimes called “Level A” Vampires, are considered to be the vampire elite. Their bloodlines are undiluted from intermarriage with humans or lower level vampires. Extremely beautiful, graceful, powerful and deadly, their regenerative capabilities and natural lifespans are almost limitless. They are practically immortal unless they are killed or choose to go to sleep and not wake up. They can only be killed by hunter weapons, or after having first been wounded or weakened by hunter weapons. It is then necessary to destroy either their head or heart to kill them permanently.
Purebloods are the only class of vampire who turn humans into vampires with their bite.
Their powers are vast and the full extent of them is unknown, but some examples we have seen include: Enhanced speed, strength, hearing, vision and smell, mind control, partial and total shape-shifting, telekinesis, psychokinesis, the ability to manipulate their own blood as weapons, the ability to manipulate elements around them, auras that can cause physical damage, the ability to melt / destroy / explode things, and other such skills. It has been said that purebloods in general are so powerful and able to regenerate so quickly that if two of them fought one-on-one it would be an endless draw, unless of course one of them found a way to make an advantage for his or herself.
Perhaps in part because of this and their naturally long lifespan, Purebloods by and large are incredibly intelligent and are often good at long range planning and manipulation of events.
Purebloods are the progenitors of the entire vampire race. Lower class vampires are the result of early intermarriage between purebloods and humans / ex-humans, and are perpetuated by continuing intermarriage between the lower vampire classes and humans / ex-humans.
The first generation of purebloods appeared shortly after a cataclysmic climate change which greatly impacted the world’s history and civilizations. That first generation were apparently born from human parents, but were not human themselves. No further information has yet been given on the cause or nature of this sudden genetic mutation, but it is possible that it may have had something to do with the same forces that caused the drastic climate change shortly before.
All lower class vampires must obey them and they are generally revered, but it has been stated that purebloods are also the most desirable prey. The power of their blood means that all other vampires hunger for it and they must be vigilant. There are laws in place that enforce the death penalty for harming a pureblood because of their growing rarity. However, also because of this growing rarity, their freedom of choice and action is also sometimes restricted or impeded, as seen in the case of Shizuka Hio and in the reasons behind why Yuki Kuran’s parents hid her.
