Yuki Kuran is the main female lead of Vampire Knight. A Pureblood Vampire, she was raised as a human with no knowledge of her past or her true nature from the time she was 5 until she was about 16. During that time she carried the name of her adopted father, Kaien Cross, and was known as Yuki Cross. Before returning to her true form, her earliest recollections were of waking up in the snow and being saved from a bad vampire by a young Kaname Kuran. Only after regaining her memories and her true nature would she recall what led up to that bloody night in the snow.

Yuki is a kind, caring girl, although often unaware of what others are feeling. She wants to make a difference and protect the people she cares about. Raised alongside Zero Kiryu after his parents were murdered by Shizuka Hio, she has deep feelings for both Kaname and Zero which often put her into conflict. She also struggles to reconcile the “her” that has always been a pureblood vampire with the “her” who lived as a human for most of her life and is slowly learning that both are equally a part of her. Friendly and sometimes amusingly clumsy or innocent, Yuki is also brave and determined, possessing hidden inner strength that even she is not always aware of until it is needed. She is just beginning to find her feet in the dangerous, intrigue-ridden vampire world to which she belongs.
